I could transform into anybody on the island, but I had to be careful of the Marcos’s. Replicating one, piece of cake, but if they could detect their counterparts, there’s a chance they’d know I wasn’t one of them. That didn’t give me many options.

I stood atop a stairwell that could walk five people shoulder-to-shoulder. I checked the brochure again. If I was reading this correctly, this would take me toward the hot tubs, the perfect cover for snooping. But further down, it should lead me into the grayed-out area of the map. It would be helpful if they had signs giving directions. This way to hot tubs or this way to the secret lair. I wasn’t asking for much.

Descending the staircase, I shifted into the first Marcos I had encountered. To differ, I let one eye go green while the other stayed blue. If I bumped into him, I hoped I could laugh my way out of it before he released the hounds. For anybody else, I’d resemble the help on a mission to work their way further into the resort.

The resort’s modern theme ended at the bottom of the stairs. Where the upstairs had been nothing but white on white. But here, amidst the white, the right wall relied on the natural rock of the mountain. I brushed my finger along the black volcanic rock, surprised by the rough coarseness. I hadn’t thought about what kept the island floating, but it must be the lava flow from the mountain.

“Great, a secret lair in a volcano. This will end well.”

I continued walking, trying to make sense of the map. To the left, I spotted the red wooden door to the hot tubs and, a little further down, the sauna. I poked my head in the hot tubs to see if there’d be any surprises. Empty. But as I opened the door to the sauna, I could hear Alpha rambling about something. I walked into the clothing area and stopped. No, he wasn’t my goal. But it was good to know he and somebody else were there should I need to duck and hide.

I left the sauna and looked back to the stairs. Clear. If I continued following the hallway, there would eventually be a right turn that should lead me to the employee-only section.

It was near impossible to predict what I’d find. Every villain had a theme that blended their personality with their goals as bringers of chaos. Some would want a laboratory to conduct experiments, while others would have a grand study. My bet, Man Bun, had a room with far too many hair care products. He’d do all his menacing from a barber chair.

I turned the corner and stopped. In the volcanic rock stood a white glass wall with a single door in the middle with black letters that read, ‘Employees Only.’ I tugged on the door handle. No luck. To the side, mounted on the glass, a retinal scanner and keypad. If I crushed it, maybe it’d open the door.
